Handcolored engraving from Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin, London, Henry Bohn, 1842. The costumes were drawn from tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts and portraits. Charles and Leopold Martin were the sons of the romantic artist and mezzotint engraver John Martin (1789-1854)

King the football-playing stallion was bought by Essex farmer Bill Foyle from a Midlands slaughter market in 1963 for 35. Bill soon discovered that the seven-year-old enjoyed a game of football and ended up playing with him every Saturday in the season. After the game the two would go together for a post-match drink in the local pub. Date: 1964

The bearded man in the white teeshirt is probably Sid Rawle (1945-2010), nicknamed King of the Hippies, founder of the Hyde Park Diggers, a land ownership campaigning group. Also present are a photographer and a cameraman. Date: late 1960s
